Offline-first SFA: field work with unreliable connectivity
Offline-first SFA lets a field team complete an agreed visit workflow when connectivity is unreliable, store visit data on the device and synchronise it when a connection returns. Reliability depends on a defined local data set and explicit conflict rules.

- SFA: field sales automation
- Durust: mobile orders, field routes and payment records

In detail
For a field team manager, the offline workflow solves a specific problem: staff can continue permitted visit activities with a weak connection, while managers can distinguish local records from operations accepted by the system. Reading a cached catalogue does not by itself mean that orders, payment records or returns can also be created offline.
Before the route, load the working data and check its freshness: outlets, products, prices, tasks and role-based limits. An empty or outdated dataset is not ready for use. Agree how old critical data may be and what happens after that point: a warning, a restricted operation or a required refresh.
Saved on the phone, sent and accepted by the server are different states. If no response arrives after sending, the outcome is unknown: the server may already have accepted the operation. Retrying the same operation retains its identifier; do not blindly create another document. Changed content needs a separate, agreed handling rule. When investigating, compare the identifier, content and last confirmed result rather than relying on the network icon.
Retrying does not resolve a business-rule conflict: a price or customer eligibility for orders may have changed after the visit. A visible reason and a decision owner are needed. Check the result for each record and its dependencies. For example, the visit is accepted but its required photo is still missing: retry the attachment linked to that visit rather than creating the visit again. An attachment error alone does not confirm that the visit was cancelled. Check the record outcome and permitted attachment retry procedure under the project rules; the exchange is still incomplete. An accepted order also does not imply stock reservation, shipment or posting in the accounting system.
In the pilot, check queue retention after an app restart, uploads with the screen locked or battery saving enabled, and expired access. A restored connection alone does not guarantee immediate background upload. Before reinstalling the app or handing over the device, agree how unconfirmed records will be handled; separately check what happens to them when accounts are switched. A local queue is not a backup against device loss. Exchange is incomplete until the record and required attachments are confirmed.
For a Smartup SFA discussion, choose one route and an operation that gets stuck with poor connectivity. Bring an anonymised example, device and app version, the expected outcome and last visible statuses. This helps distinguish data, access and transmission issues and select a pilot check. Do not share passwords or the full customer database. Available offline actions, background uploads, accounting-system exchange and pilot terms are agreed for the project.
How it is applied
- Describe the route, staff role and visit activity that cannot be completed with poor connectivity. Distinguish reading data from creating an operation.
- Show the sequence for one example: local record, transmission, server response and dependent attachment. Specify the expected status at each step.
- Identify the device, operating system, app version and working dataset before departure. Include app restart, screen lock, battery saving and expired access in the checks.
- For a stuck operation, prepare anonymised identifiers, timestamps, last statuses and the error text. Retain the link between the visit and attachment; agree how to handle the queue before reinstalling the app or handing over the device.
- Assign an exception owner and pilot criteria: the record is retained, retries do not duplicate it, partial exchange remains visible and conflict decisions are clear. Confirm actual support for each scenario on the agreed devices.
Practical checklist
- Offline actions are defined for each role.
- The user can see the synchronisation state of every critical operation.
- Retrying an operation does not create another order or payment.
- Each conflict has an owner and a clear review path.
Scope and limits
The same offline workflow cannot be assumed for every device, length of disconnection or module set. Local data, freshness windows and synchronisation rules are agreed for each implementation.
